COL Mike Ball, U.S. Air Force (Ret)

Colonel Ball grew up in the Washington DC area, went to college at Capital University, Columbus, Ohio and earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics.  In his words “I was ripe for the Draft so I joined the Navy Reserve”.  He later, went to Air Force Officer Training School and received his officer’s commission.

His first assignment was as a Missile Maintenance Officer, Titan II, at Vandenberg AFB in California.  Later, was transferred to Mather AFB for training and was distinguished graduate at both Navigator Training and Navigator Bombardier Training.

After training he was assigned to F4’s at MacDill AFB.  Later, serving as Weapons Systems Officer (WSO), F-4Ds at Udorn Air Base, Thailand, completing 207 combat missions.  His next assignment was as WSO, F-4C/D/E, Wing Life Support Officer, at Torrejon AB, Spain, where he flew throughout Europe and Turkey.

He returned to California as an Aircraft Maintenance Officer at the Sacramento Air Logistics Center, where he ended his active duty and continued on as an Active Reservist in several different Individual Mobilization Augmentee positions and eventually, as the Senior Individual Mobilization Augmentee (IMA) to the Commander, 77th Air Base Wing, McClellan Air Force Base, California.  Where he assisted with the direction of a combined work force of 3,000 personnel and managed a yearly operating budget of $100 million dollars. 

He retired in 1997, at the rank of Colonel, having completed 12years active duty and 20 years as a Reserve Officer.  He had over 1,500 flight hours in several different aircraft (F-4, A-6, B-52 and T-29) and qualified as a Senior Navigator.  He was awarded the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with thirteen oak leaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with “V” device, Air Force Organizational Excellence Award, and Combat Readiness Medal.

During his reserve service, he earned his Masters of Science degree in Systems Management, University of Southern California, CA and later was a full time commercial industrial real estate specialist and had worked for Ashwell-Birke, Cushman and Wakefield and Grubb and Ellis real estate firms. 

After approximately 17 years, he entered the Financial Services field where he earned his Chartered Retirement Plan Chancellor (CRPC) designation.  He is currently a Personal Financial Advisor with Ameriprise Financial Services in Walnut Creek, helping individuals achieve their financial goals and guiding them through retirement.

He is a LIFE Member of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) and currently serving as elected Treasurer for the Contra Costa Chapter – MOAA.
Colonel Ball and his wife, Karen are from Bethesda, MD and Swanton, OH, respectively.  They reside in Walnut Creek and have two sons: Christopher and Nathan.
